Neurosurgeon

Dr. Jared Ament

Focused on preserving motion and advancing thoughtful surgical strategy, his work bridges clinical research, global outreach, and the evolving conversation in modern health.

Brain & Spine

Clinical Approach

The brain and spine function as one continuous system. Every surgical decision is made to remove pathology, preserve structure, and protect looking and feeling like yourself.

Portrait of the surgeon

Dr. Ament treats the brain and spine as one continuous system. Each surgical decision is made to address the underlying problem, preserve normal anatomy, and protect neurological function.

His practice covers the full neuraxis, from the brain and cranial nerves through the cervical and lumbar spine. He treats nerve compression, brain and skull-base tumors, facial pain disorders, and degenerative disease of the neck and lower back. In each case, treatment is based on correcting the anatomy and preserving function, not on a fixed procedure.

In the spine, Dr. Ament is a leader in motion preservation as an alternative to fusion. Fusion stabilizes a painful segment by eliminating its movement, which can increase stress on the levels above and below. His approach, 360° arthroplasty, replaces both the disc in front and the facet joints behind to restore the entire spinal segment. He is currently advancing this technique through clinical trials.
The same principles apply to his cranial work. Procedures are planned with image guidance to the millimeter, with the goal of removing the pathology safely while preserving the surrounding brain.

Clinical
Approach

The brain and spine function as one continuous system. Every surgical decision is made to remove pathology, preserve structure, and protect long-term neurological function.

From being a world leader in artificial disc and facet replacement, Dr. Ament has advanced motion preservation through techniques that integrate both anterior and posterior surgical approaches. This comprehensive, dual-access strategy—reflecting a full circumferential treatment of the spine—is what he has coined 360° lumbar arthroplasty, allowing for restoration of movement while maintaining natural spinal biomechanics.

Often described as an “anti-fusion” surgeon, Dr. Ament’s philosophy is grounded in motion preservation—prioritizing functional restoration and long-term mobility. His work challenges the routine reliance on fusion by focusing on outcomes that support sustained movement.

That same surgical judgment extends beyond the spine. His work includes robotic spine procedures, brain tumor resection, and microsurgical treatment of facial pain syndromes, all grounded in precision and long-term neurological function.

The brain and spine are not separate. They are one system. Every operation begins with the same question: what must be treated, and what must be preserved.

360°
Arthroplasty

An approach that pairs an artificial disc at the front of the spine with a facet replacement system at the back, addressing both at a single lumbar level. It is designed as a motion-preserving alternative to fusion for select patients, and the combined use of these devices at the same level is being evaluated in a clinical study.

01 Designed to preserve motion Both implants are designed to allow movement at the treated level rather than fusing it. How much motion a patient keeps varies from person to person.
02 Front and back, one level The disc at the front and the facet joints at the back are addressed together at the same lumbar level.
03 A potential alternative to fusion For patients who qualify, this approach is being studied as a long-term, motion-preserving option. Dr. Ament can review whether it fits your situation, along with its risks and benefits.

Prodisc® L + TOPS™, combined at the same lumbar level

Prodisc® L and the TOPS™ System are each FDA-approved. Their combined use at the same lumbar level is investigational and is being evaluated in this clinical study for safety and effectiveness. Study-related care and follow-up are provided at no cost to participants who qualify.

Quick eligibility check
Are you between 35 and 80 years old?
Diagnosed with degenerative spondylolisthesis or degenerative disc disease, with leg or low back pain?
Tried at least 3 months of non-surgical care without relief?
Answer all three to see if you may qualify This is a quick pre-screen only. The research team reviews every case and makes the final determination.
